The World Series champion San Francisco Giants lost their beloved Panda to the Boston Red Sox this week. Perhaps they were a bit shocked that he left, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t going to be aggressive this offseason. After losing out on the Sandoval sweepstakes, the Giants have a lot of money to spend, and General Manager Brian Sabean is checking in on big names on both the free agent and trade markets.
According to a report by Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Giants have shown interest in free agents Max Scherzer, Nelson Cruz, Nick Markakis, Chase Headley, Torii Hunter, Jon Lester, and even ex-Giant Melky Cabrera. They have also checked in on Justin Upton and Jay Bruce.
The Giants are defiantly looking for an upgrade at the hot corner after the departure of Sandoval, and Headley represents the next best option. They could also use an upgrade in the outfield. The Giants interest in Scherzer and Lester shows that they are not afraid to spend top dollars. Lester is probably a long shot, but Scherzer is an intriguing option.
Scherzer has yet to establish a market other than the Tigers, and the Yankees. The question is are they willing to pay the $160 million plus that’s it’s going to take to land him. If the Giants land him, they would have a one two punch of Madison Bumgarner and Scherzer which is scary to even think about.
Not only do the Giants have the money, there consistent success, and loyalty makes them an attractive option for many players.
Don’t be surprised if the Giants land two or three star players this winter.
