BREAKING: Kevin Cash Hired as Rays Manager

The Tampa Bay Rays have hired Kevin Cash as their next manager, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. Cash is the 5th manager in franchise history.

Cash replaces Joe Maddon, who opted out of his contract with the Rays to become the manager of the Chicago Cubs. Cash was selected over former Seattle Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu.

Cash has no previous managerial experience. His only coaching experience came as the bullpen coach for Terry Francona and the Cleveland Indians the past two seasons. He also spent the 2012 season as an advanced scout.

Cash, a Tampa, Florida native, spent eight years in the major leagues. He was a backup catcher for five teams. Known as a great defensive catcher, he was the personal catcher for knucklerballer Tim Wakefield with the Boston Red Sox.

Cash had a career .183 average with 12 home runs and 58 RBI.
