A slow-moving and rumor filled Winter Meetings has at least brought one check to the to-do list for the New York Mets. The club has signed outfielder and first basemen John Mayberry Jr to a 1 year, 1.45 million dollar major league deal, as the Mets finally grab a right-handed power bench bat that they have lacked in recent years. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports was the first to report the news.
Mayberry hit .243 with 5 homers in 70 plate appearances against left-handed pitching last season for the Blue Jays before being non-tendered. Hitting lefties will be his role with the Mets this season, presumably when starting in the outfield against lefties while Michael Cuddyer takes over for Lucas Duda at First Base. Mets fans have been crticial of the Winter Meetings thus far, and while this signing isn’t a big splash, it’s a start.
