Yankees To Pay For Education Of Slain NYPD Officer’s Children

The New York Yankees will pay for the education of NYPD Officer Rafael Ramos’ children, according to the New York Daily News. Ramos was one of two NYPD officers killed in Brooklyn, NY on Saturday. The other officer was Wenjian Liu, who was married with no children.

The education will be funded by former Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner’s Yankee Silver Shield Foundation. Ramos had two sons, one in college and the other 13 years old. Both will have their education paid for by the foundation.

Steinbrenner started the foundation in 1982 after seeing four children and their mother fold an American Flag at the funeral of their father who was an NYPD officer.

The foundation has also paid for the education of thousands of children of fallen NYPD, FDNY, PAPD and state officers. In addition, the foundation has paid for the education of 700 children who lost a parent in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
