As we approach the 2015 season, Baseball Essential will be ranking the top catchers in Major League Baseball. The rankings are based off the last two seasons for offense (FanGraphs), three seasons for defense (FanGraphs), and two seasons for pitch framing (Stat Corner).
1. Buster Posey
2014: 144 wRC+, 5.7 fWAR, -4 DRS, 6th in +strikes called
2013: 134 wRC+, 4.8 fWAR, 4 DRS, 9th in + strikes called
From 2012-2014, Posey ranked 10th in FanGraphs’ defensive measurement (Defense – Fielding and Positional Adjustment combined). Posey hasn’t shown signs of regression and steamer feels the same way projecting him to be the best catcher in 2015.
