Downside To Each Team’s Biggest Free Agent Signing: National League

Cincinnati Reds: Burke Badenhop
Badenhop killed it in the Red Sox bullpen last summer. In what was his seventh Major League season, he posted an ERA below 3.00 for the first time in his career and had room to play around while doing it, finishing 2014 with a 2.29 earned run average and his 13 holds were just two less than he had recorded over the three previous seasons. The issue here is that it is impossible to tell if Boston caught lightning in a bottle last year and got lucky when taking a chance on Badenhop, or if he really has figured out how to be a very reliable relief pitcher in this league. Cincinnati relievers were credited with 31 losses last season which was the second highest total in the Majors and they were 26th in bullpen ERA. Badenhop is being brought in to improve an area of weakness for the club and if he falls back to the pitcher he was before his stint in Boston, then it will be a long season for Reds fans after no extra bullpen help was added this winter.
