Denver, CO – The Western Athletic Conference handed out its first set of WAC Weekly Baseball honors on Monday, announcing Grand Canyon University’s Chad De La Guerra and The University of Texas-Pan American’s Ryan Jackson as the Hitter and Pitcher of the Week respectively for February 9-15.
De La Guerra a senior infielder from Santa Maria, CA, propelled the Antelopes to a perfect 3-0 start, hitting safely in all three games, while going (7-13) with three home runs, 12 RBI’s and seven runs scored .
The reigned WAC batting champion’s biggest performance came on Sunday in a 30-7 GCU victory over Bradley University to close the weekend. In day’s opening game, De La Guerra went (5-6) with a pair of home runs, nine RBI and five runs scored.
GCU will wrap up their home stand with an evening matchup against with The University of Nevada-Las Vegas on February 17th, before hitting the road for a weekend series with Cal-Poly beginning February 20th.
Jackson a freshman from McAllen, TX, was a major contributor for the Broncs success in their season opening tournament at Jackson State University.
In his first collegiate start, Jackson dominated Tennessee-Martin, throwing eight innings of one run ball, allowing just five hits, while striking out eight and sacrificing just one walk.
Jackson’s control was evident from his first pitch, as he retired the first and last seven batters he faced, throwing 75 of his 95 pitches for strikes.
UTPA will bring their 2-2 record back home this weekend when as they play host to Abilene Christian University in the Al Ogletree Classic. Game One is scheduled for Friday at 7:00 p.m from Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
