College Baseball Roundup: Tar Heels Jump to ACC Edge over Duke

While a national ESPN television audience zeroed in on the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill for a little hoops encounter between Duke and North Carolina Saturday night, that same intense rivalry had already played out for the second straight day on the baseball diamond.

And just as in Friday’s opener, it was the Tar Heels (10-3) that came away victorious, posting a 6-2 throttling of the Blue Devils (also 10-3) that gave #11 UNC a 2-0 jumpstart in ACC play against their opponent from nearby Durham.

J. B. Bukauskas scattered 4 hits over 6 shutout innings and third baseman Logan Warmoth went 3-for-3 and drove in a run as the Tar Heels took a 3-0 advantage in the 4th frame and made it stand up with some outstanding defensive work and clutch relief from Nick Raquet and Trent Thornton.  UNC escaped a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the 7th when reliever Trevor Kelley snagged a hard liner up the middle and first baseman Zack Gahagan speared a potential base hit with a dive to his right.

The early edge resulted when Duke starter Michael Matuella, throwing with a predetermined pitch limit, left after 3 innings after surrendering just one hit.  The Heels jumped on his replacement, Mitch Stallings, for a 3-run rally in the 4th.  Landon Lassiter, who had 3 hits in the contest, led off with a double and came around to score when Tyler Ramirez lined a triple down the right-field line.  Adrian Chacon‘s sacrifice fly brought Ramirez home in a close play at the plate, and Warmoth added an RBI single before the uprising was ended.

After using their defensive prowess in the top of the 7th to elude Duke’s threat, UNC tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame when Gahagan and Brian Miller delivered run-scoring singles.  The Blue Devils cut it to 5-2 in the top of the 8th on a 2-run double by Mike Rosenfeld, but the Heels rebounded in the bottom of the inning when Alex Raburn was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home the final tally.

The Dodgertown Classic in Los Angeles continued to provide outstanding baseball when freshman pinch-hitter Adalberto Carrillo drilled a 2-out solo home run in the bottom of the 9th as Southern Cal (14-1) knocked off #1 Vanderbilt (11-3) 6-5 in walkoff fashion.  Carrillo, who had started just one game and appeared in only 7 overall with 7 at-bats, blasted his first career HR and drove in his 1st collegiate run off Vandy bullpen ace Ben Bowden to close out a back-and-forth game that Vandy had managed to tie 3 times before Carrillo’s clout.

Dante Flores belted a solo home run for the Trojans and Garrett Stubbs delivered 2 RBIs, while Zander Wiel and Tyler Campbell collected 3 hits apiece for the Commodores, who had a 9-game winning streak snapped by the surprising hosts.

In the evening’s other Dodgertown Classic matchup, Alex Young struck out 9 and allowed just a single run on 3 hits in 8 strong innings as #6 TCU (9-2) slipped past #4 UCLA (11-3) 3-1.  Evan Skoug doubled in a run in the 4th to tie the game and Elliott Barzilli, who was 3-for-4, doubled in 2 more in the 6th for the Horned Frogs.  No Bruin player had more than 1 hit.
