The San Francisco Giants were going for the four game sweep Sunday against the reeling Washingtom Nationals for the first time since they left Montreal for the nation’s capital. Madison Bumgarner was the star throwing a complete game shutout with 14 strikeouts while hitting a double, and a home run. He had six total bases, the Nationals had three. The final score was 5-0.
That’s Bumgarner’s sixth shutout including two last October.
Bumgarner’s homer was the tenth of his career and fourth on the season raising his slugging to .491. He leads all pitchers in home runs, wRC+ and offensive fWAR on the season after winning the Silver Slugger last year.

After his masterful shutout, Bumgarner has pitched 163.1 innings with a 2.98 ERA, 2.86 FIP, 2.92 xFIP with a 4.7 combined fWAR. Among qualified pitchers he’s eleventh in fWAR, FIP, and sixth in strikeouts. He won’t win the National League Cy Young Award, but he’s on pace to get a bunch of votes.
Bumgarner’s club options for 2018 and 2019 for $12MM would increase to $14MM with top-three finish in Cy Young vote 2012-17 or $16MM by winning Cy Young in 2012-17 (Baseball Prospectus).
The Giants sit at 64-53, 3.5 games back of the second Wild Card, and 2.5 back for the division. They start a seven game road trip in St. Louis tomorrow and ending the trip in Pittsburgh.
