Fernando Rodney was designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners late Saturday night according to multiple reports.
The Mariners signed Rodney to a two-year, $14 million deal in 2014. Last season he recorded 48 saves while appearing in 69 games with a 2.85 ERA. This season was a totally different story. Rodney lost the closer role for the M’s several months ago, and held a 5.68 ERA this season.
His last appearance for Seattle came on Friday night against the Chicago White Sox where he recorded only one out, gave up two hits, a walk and three earned runs.
The M’s will now look to try to trade Fernando Rodney. If they are unsuccessful he will be released by the club.
Rodney will be a free agent this offseason and will be 39 years old entering next season. He still throws a mid-90’s fastball which could help him find a new landing spot in 2016.
