Dick Wantz (25)
May 13, 1965
Another player who had his chance to prove himself in the majors taken way too early was Dick Wantz. Teetering between the starting rotation and the bullpen in the minors, Wantz made the Los Angeles Angels opening day roster as a reliever in 1965. On April 13, Wantz pitched the top of the eighth inning, trailing 5-0. He gave up three hits and two runs in that inning. Afterwards, he complained of headaches which were later discovered to be related to a brain tumor. A month later, Wantz died during an operation to remove that tumor.
