The 33-year-old will have some competition in spring training with Tony Cruz, the Cardinals’ current backup catcher to Yadier Molina. Pena slashed .273/.334/.324 in 2015 with league-average defense while Cruz struggled at the plate more, slashing .204/.235/.310 in 2015 with similar defense.
