The 2016 Oakland Athletics are coming off a terrible record that could have been good. They lost 22 games by one run or less, and they did that with a pitching staff ravaged by injury, a rotation that seemed, at times, to be chosen by throwing darts at the remaining names, and some wonderful pitching by Scott Kazmir, Sonny Gray, and a couple of others. Kazmir is gone, though, as are Ben Zobrist and Tyler Clippard, and – in what has got to be becoming a familiar scenario, the A’s are headed into a new season with a lot of question marks.
I’m reminded of the early scene in the movie “Major League,” when one of the Cleveland Indians fans said, “Who are these *[email protected](& guys? They don’t look so good.” Change is the only constant on the A’s roster, but it’s not all bad news. Billy Burns is killing it at the plate, and Josh Reddick is around for another year. There are pieces to build on.
With that in mind, let’s look at five major questions for the 2016 Oakland Athletics.
