Denard Span will play center field and lead off

According to Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area, Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy announced Denard Span will start and lead off in center field over Angel Pagan to start the 2016 campaign. Span signed with San Francisco in the offseason to a three-year, $31 million deal. This likely means Pagan will slide over to left field.

Span, 31, has a .350 OBP in 4121 plate appearances in the lead off spot and a lifetime OBP of .352. Over 96 percent of his career plate appearances have come from the lead off spot, while 52 percent of Pagan’s plate appearances have come from the lead off spot.

If Pagan doesn’t pan out in left field, they also have Gregor Blanco, Mac Williamson, and Jarrett Parker as possible options before looking in the trade or free agency market.

Pagan was a good centerfielder but age & injuries limit his playing time. Span for the next 3 seasons can be among the best all around leadoff hitter & centerfielder in baseball.
Pagan’s best bet is to share playing time with Blanco in left field in this his last year of his current contract.
