Orioles’ Machado Lands on DL With Knee Sprain

Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado has been placed on the 15 day disabled list, retroactive to Tuesday, with a right knee sprain. Machado was injured Monday evening in Baltimore’s dominant victory over New York.

On an awkward-looking swing, Machado hit a weak ground ball towards shortstop, and injured himself attempting to exit the batter’s box. His leg seemingly collapsed from underneath him, and he immediately fell the ground in pain, grabbing his right knee. The same knee that the 22 year old gruesomely injured last September 23rd at Tropicana Field. Fortunately, the MRI this time around showed just a sprain, and the Orioles expect to have their Gold Glove winning 3rd baseman back sooner rather than later.

In 82 games this season, Machado boasts a slash line of .278/.324/.431, to go along with 12 home runs and 32 RBIs. In a corresponding move, the club has recalled infielder Cord Phelps from Triple-A Norfolk. He owns a .159 career batting average in limited Major League at bats.
