Cardinals acquire INF Ty Kelly from Mariners for RHP Sam Gaviglio

On Thursday, the St. Louis Cardinals acquired third and second baseman Ty Kelly from the Mariners in exchange for right-handed pitcher Sam Gaviglio. Both teams announced the deal.

Kelly has battled through six Minor League Baseball seasons – one in A-, two in A, one in A+, two in AA and three in AAA. It has been a long road for the 26-year-old. In the six MiLB seasons, Kelly has slashed .282/.387/.386 and has hit 39 long balls and 336 RBI’s. He has also drawn 434 walks. He is a player that the Cardinals may rely on in their future and he could appear at the end of the regular season.

Gaviglio, 24, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 40th round of the 2008 MLB June Amateur Draft. Then he was drafted again by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 5th round of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft.

The four-year MiLB pitcher has put up a 18-22 record along with a 3.78 ERA. The last season in AA with Springfield was his worst. During that season, he went 5-12 with a 4.28 ERA. He also had a 1.456 WHIP that season. However, in his entire MiLB career, he has a 1.26 WHIP.
