According to Cincinnati Reds beat writer Mark Sheldon, a source told MLB.com today that the Reds are interested in free agent relief pitcher, John Axford.
Axford had a great year in 2011 in which he posted a 1.95 ERA with the Milwaukee Brewers and recorded 46 saves that year as well. Since then, Axford has struggled to find the same success he found in a Brewers uniform in 2011. He’s bounced around to a few different teams since then spending time over the past two seasons in St. Louis, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. In 13 appearances last year in Pittsburgh, he had a 4.09 ERA with 12 strikeouts over 11 innings pitched.
It’s no secret that the Reds bullpen struggled last year to find consistency in the back end of the bullpen ahead of Aroldis Chapman. Axford made $4.5 million last year and is arbitration eligible.
