2. Yosmany Tomas 3B/OF: As the newest major Cuban import, Tomas brings big thunder in his bat. Arizona, who signed him for a six years, $68.5 million dollar contract. His 6’1”, 230 lb frame will help him put up big power numbers in Arizona, as he is going to get an opportunity to win the third base position in Spring Training. Early reports were that he would play outfield, but it turns out he wants to play third.
Like most Cuban defects, Tomas is a relative unknown commodity, but reports are that he impressed team executives in his showcase. It will be interesting to see how he adjusts to Major League pitching and if he will be able to learn to hit off speed pitches. At age 24, he has some time to develop those skills, and there seems to be no question that he possesses the power now.
