Five Biggest Steals of Free Agency

Billy Butler (1B/DH) – Oakland Athletics – 3 years/$30 million

Although he’s coming off somewhat of a down year, Billy Butler is a steal for the Athletics. It seems as if Billy Beane is letting everything but the kitchen sink go, but he likes what he saw in Butler. Butler is labeled as a first-baseman, but defensively he’s a liability. His OBP is something that probably caught the attention of the A’s, last season it was a career-low .323 which isn’t that bad, but in the 2013 season his OBP was .374 which was 19th in all of baseball. The 2014 World Series showed what Butler was made of at the plate, going 5-15 finishing the fall classic with a line of .333/.375/.400. Butler would have gotten a lot more money if he had more power, but $30 million over three years could be a total steal for the Oakland Athletics.

If Billy Butler had shown more power, he wouldn’t have signed with the A’s. Royals would have picked up his option.

The Butler signing is bigger in name only, but his impact will be negligible for that team after the fire sale they’ve engaged in.
