St. Louis Cardinals: Top 10 Prospects

9. Luke Weaver, 21

Weaver was the third consecutive college pitcher taken with the Cardinals first pick in the draft. He follows Michael Wacha in 2012 and Marco Gonzales in 2013 and it is fair to say that expectations for Weaver are probably too high as the other two reached the majors within 14 months of getting drafted. That could mean Weaver would have to make his MLB debut in 2015 and I just don’t see that happening. The Cardinals took it a lot slower with Weaver in his first year than they did with Wacha and Gonzales, as Weaver threw just 9 1/3 innings this year compared to 23 from Gonzales and 21 from Wacha. Weaver has a fastball that hits the low 90’s and an above average change-up. While we can’t expect the same route the other two took, Weaver fits their mold to a tee. I would expect him to start the season at High-A Palm Beach and could finish either at Double-A Springfield or Triple-A Memphis. Again, we can’t assume he will be in St. Louis in 2015.
