The Chicago Cubs announced today that they have invited 19 non-roster invitees to spring training. The players invited are ones the Cubs want to see more of and ones that are not on the 40-man roster. All players on the 40-man roster are invited to spring training without an invitee. Here’s the list of the non-roster invitees:
Note: The Cubs non-roster list technically goes down to 18 as Watkins torn his Achilles and is likely out for the remainder of the season. Watkins had surgery today and he tweeted today that surgery went well.
Players to watch this spring on invitations:
*3B/OF Kris Bryant: Bryant is the Cubs top prospect and a former first round pick. Bryant will see the majors this season ad sooner rather than later.
*INF Addison Russell: Russell is the Cubs second best prospect and he was acquired from Oakland last season. Russell could very well see Wrigley this season as well.
*C/OF Kyle Schwarber: Schwarber was drafted by the in the first round of last year’s draft. Schwarber killed the lower levels of minor league ball and is the best pure hitter in the Cubs system, per Baseball America.
*OF Albert Almora: Almora is another former first round pick by the Cubs, but has fallen down on the rankings. Almora had an up and down season last year. He is a great defender and best in the Cubs minor leagues, per Baseball America. Almora will start the season in double-A.
*RHP Pierce Johnson: Johnson is one of the Cubs top pitching prospects and starting to climb up the minors. Johnson is a former sandwich pick – a 1A pick.
RHP Armando Rivera: Rivera has a live arm and expected to be a great part of the bullpen in the near future. Rivera’s downfall is his control issues, but if he can get that under control, he can be very effective.
The Cubs non-roster invitees look fun and a good look forward to spring training. By the Cubs announcing their non-roster invitees, it shows spring training is right around the corner!
