On Tuesday, the Detroit Tigers, brought back a familiar face to their bullpen by signing Joba Chamberlain to a one-year Major League contract. According to MLB.com, the contract for the 29-year-old Chamberlain is reportedly worth $ 1 million, with an additional $ 500,000 in incentives.
By bringing back the right-handed reliever, it will definitely add some depth to what has for several years now been a lackluster bullpen. Speaking this morning at the Tigers Spring Training facility in Lakeland, Florida, Chamberlain, who shocked teammates and media members alike by showing up beardless, said
“It was just my teammates and my coaches and the city embraced me. I loved playing there (Detroit) every day, I left it all on the field.”
Last season Chamberlain went 2-5 while posting a 3.57 ERA, while posting 59 strikeouts in 69 innings. Chamberlain looks to improve from the 2014 season, and had this to say about last season:
“For me, it was part of, too, I didn’t finish the season the way I wanted to, and we have unfinished business as a team, and I personally do.”
” I started off well and just, at the end, I didn’t finish the way I wanted to.”
When asked about the infamous beard he maintained last year, but did not bring with him to Spring Training Chamberlain said “we’re definitely going to keep it a little bit restrained from what it was last year.”
To make room for Chamberlain on the Tigers 40 man roster, reliever Chad Smith was designated for assignment.
