Backup Catcher: Ryan Hanigan

2014 Stats (with Rays): 84 games, 18 runs, 9 doubles, 5 home runs, 34 RBI, 1 steal, .218/.318/.324/.642

Acquired from the San Diego Padres for Middlebrooks in the offseason, Hanigan will be the backup catcher to Vazquez this season. Hanigan also replaces former backup David Ross, who spent two seasons with the Red Sox and signed with the Chicago Cubs in the off-season.

Hanigan brings stability to the backup position until Swihart is ready to make the jump to the majors, which could be by the end of this season. Hanigan spent last season with the Tampa Bay Rays, which helps bring knowledge of AL East opponents. Like Vazquez, Hanigan will need to learn the pitching staff and will most likely hit at the bottom of the order.
