According to Phillies GM Ruben Amaro and Manager Ryne Sandberg, Domonic Brown is likely to miss Opening Day, and could find himself on the DL to start the season. If this is the case, the Phillies will carry Jeff Francoeur, Jordan Danks, Brian Bogusevic, and Darin Ruf.
Brown’s recovery from tendonitis in his left Achilles has been “slow,” and seeing the downhill spiral Ryan Howard fell into after tearing his Achilles is causing some concern amongst Phillies fans.
Let’s be honest, Brown hasn’t lived up to they hype. Baring the month of May 2013 when he hit 12 homers (almost half his season total, which landed him an All-Star nod), he’s been disappointing to say the least.
If we look past the lofty homer total for Brown in 2013, he was almost as bad in his all-star year as he was in 2014. In 2013, Brown had the rd worst WAR (1.6), and his OBP was eleventh among left fielders. His walk rate was just 7.2%, he had the second worst BABIP (.287) among left fielders, and his defensive WAR was minus-15.9. Those are NOT all-star caliber numbers.
I’ll be the first to admit, I fell into the homer trap. I thought there was a reason for all the hype. I thought he would have a bounce back year. He still may. But, all the signs point to a repeat of 2014 Brown. And, all of a sudden, some validity has been given to those Phillies fans who were on the “sell high” bandwagon.
