Five Bold Predictions for the 2015 Los Angeles Dodgers

4) The Yasmani Grandal/A.J. Ellis platoon will be the best-hitting catching duo in baseball.

Ellis has always had great plate discipline — despite batting .191 last year, his on-base percentage (.323) was only three points below All-Star leadoff hitter Dee Gordon‘s, and his career OBP is more than 100 points higher than his batting average (.343 to .242) and higher than the OBPs of speedster teammates Carl Crawford and Jimmy Rollins. Grandal has a similar approach at the plate, but with significantly more power, and he looks to rebound from injuries and controversy. Ellis will benefit greatly from getting most of his at-bats against lefties, and the switch-hitting Grandal is better from the left side. The two will combine to hit about .270 with an OBP pushing .400 and 20 home runs, a level of production that tops every other team’s starter/backup catching duo.
