2. Jon Lester must establish the strike zone early, pound the bottom of the zone.
After signing a 6 year, $155 million contract, Jon Lester represents a symbol of hope for Cubs fans. Nearly 4 months to the day after signing that contract, Cubs fans will be watching with bated breath to see how Lester fares against the Cardinals. If Lester can establish the strike zone early, he can neutralize a very good Cardinals lineup that doesn’t feature many easy outs anywhere. If Lester can keep the ball down, he can settle into a groove early can put the Cardinals bats to sleep.
The last things anyone wants to see is Lester struggle early, run up the pitch count, and re-aggravate the “dead arm” that bothered him in the Spring. Going against Adam Wainwright, Lester will need to be at his best.
