Five Bold Predictions for the 2015 Toronto Blue Jays

4. The Jays will flirt with the idea of having Dickey in the bullpen

With Russell Martin now able to handle R.A. Dickey’s knuckleball and there being no need for a special catcher for him, the Blue Jays will look to make the most out of his deceiving pitch.

Only years removed from a surprising Cy Young award, Dickey is an innings eater. I know that and so do the Jays, but as the only active knuckleball pitcher in the game, the ability to go from young pitchers throwing in the high 90’s to a knuckleball reliever will be too tempting a prospect to try.

For Dickey to transition, the Jays would need someone like Roberto Osuna to stretch out into a starter, but the team has a history of players who would be good enough to be starters help win championships in the bullpen (Pat Hentgen, David Wells and Jimmy Key were all in the Jays’ bullpen in their championship years).

With no UCL to hurt and less rest needed for a knuckleball pitcher, Dickey could bring the type of tools to a bullpen that a championship team would need.
