The Top 10 Baseball Quotes

This being my first post here at Baseball Essential, I feel its only right that I introduce myself. My name is Cory, and I am from New York, but I am currently playing D3 college baseball in Pennsylvania. I run a twitter account called @BaseballQuotes1, which, you guessed it, quotes baseball players. Now that we’re acquainted, on to the good stuff.

There’s nothing like a good quote. I’ve heard and read basically every quote from ball players and about the game of baseball. From funny to motivational to crazy, here are the best baseball quotes of all time.

  1. “Baseball was, is, and always will be the best game in the world to me.” — Babe Ruth

The Great Bambino said it best — there is truly nothing better than baseball. This quote is simple, and packs a powerful message.

  2. “They give you a round bat and they throw you a round ball and they tell you to hit it square.” — Willie Stargell

One of the more comedic quotes, this lifetime Pirate expresses how crazy baseball actually is with this one liner.

  3. “You can’t sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You’ve got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That’s why baseball is the greatest game of them all.” — Earl Weaver

Earl was known for his short temper and for being outspoken, but this quote shows how passionate he was for the game of baseball. Earl states that this is a gentlemen’s game, and every win has to be earned

  4. “Remember these two things: Play hard and have fun.” — Tony Gwynn

Baseball is a kids game, and to be successful you have to have fun. Tony’s joyful laugh showed that he was always enjoying his time on the field, and this quote exemplifies his play style. Rest in peace, Mr. Padre.

  5. “How can you not be romantic about baseball?” — Moneyball

The sights, the sounds, the smell, the crack of the bat. There’s always something to fall in love with when it comes to baseball, and this quote from the movie depicting the ’02 A’s season captures that perfectly.

  6. “Baseball is 90% mental, and the other half is physical.” — Yogi Berra

This list couldn’t go without a Yogi-ism. This quote says that there is a lot of mental pressure in this game, and you have to not think to be successful.

  7. “Man this is baseball. You gotta stop thinking, just have fun.” — The Sandlot

From a kid’s perspective, baseball is all about having fun, and this quote from Benny the Jet to Smalls stresses that perfectly. If you have fun, you’ll be successful.

  8. “Baseball is dull only to dull minds.” — Red Barber

Whenever I hear someone say baseball is boring, I recite this quote from the longtime broadcaster. This game is so detail oriented and has so much going on, it’s never dull to watch a ball game.

  9. “I’d walk through hell in a gasoline suit to play baseball.” — Pete Rose

This quote perfectly describes Charlie Hustle’s love and passion to play the game. I don’t know that I would go as far as Pete, but his desire to play America’s Pastime is unmatched.

  10. “Life will always throw you curves, just keep fouling them off. The right pitch will come, and when it does, be prepared to run the bases.”
– Rick Maksian

Not only does this apply to baseball, but to life as well. This quote says that you need to always fight off and overcome challenges in your life and you will be successful.
