Cubs call up top prospect Addison Russell

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Chicago Cubs are now calling up infielder and top prospect Addison Russell.

The Cubs called up phenom Kris Bryant last week and are now calling up their top middle infield prospect Russell. Bryant is slashing .429/.579/.571 in 19 plate appearances since his promotion.

Russell, 21, slashed .300/.376/.519 with 38 home runs in 1080 career minor league plate appearances while taking on the second-base position recently. With Javier Baez struggling the opportunity to turn double plays with Starlin Castro became available.

The Cubs tried Tommy La Stella, Airsmendy Alcantara, and Jonathan Herrera at second-base, but finally decided to promote Russell. The club, like with Bryant, will have one more season of control since they waited 13 days to call promote Russell.

The Cubs have had the worst second-base production in baseball posting a 3 wRC+ with a -0.4 fWAR and a slash of .136/.217/.130 – Russell will definitely help right away.
