UPDATE: MLB Suspends Seven From White Sox/Royals Brawl

UPDATE: Major League Baseball has punished several players from Thursday night’s brawl between the White Sox and Royals. Pitchers Chris Sale, Jeff Samardzija, and Edinson Volquez have all received 5-game suspensions. Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura has received a 7-game suspension. Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain and relief pitcher Kelvin Herrera have both received 2-game suspensions. All six players have received an undisclosed fine in addition to their respective suspensions. White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers has also received an undisclosed fine. There have been no statements from the clubs or players on whether or not anyone will appeal.

In Thursday night’s game between the White Sox and Royals at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, Yordano Ventura was once again involved in an incident that led to benches clearing.

In the seventh inning of the game (which the Royals eventually won 3-2 in 13 innings), Adam Eaton hit a hard grounder, which Ventura fielded. For some reason, this angered the fiery young pitcher, who looked at Eaton and appeared to say, “F— you,” before throwing over to first base. Eaton did not take kindly to this. Both benches cleared, punched were thrown, and five players were ejected. The ejected were:

Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain

Royals pitchers Ventura and Edinson Volquez

White Sox pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Chris Sale

This is the second consecutive start for Ventura that has ended in an ejection. He was ejected last Saturday in the fourth inning of his start against the Oakland A’s for hitting Brett Lawrie with a 99-MPH fastball. Lawrie had been involved in an incident the day before after sliding hard into Royals’ shortstop Alcides Escobar, and his plunking by Ventura came immediately after a three-run home run by Josh Reddick.

Ventura was fined but not suspended for his actions on Saturday, but a suspension may be coming his way for his role in tonight’s donnybrook.
