The Texas Rangers are closing in on a deal to re-acquire outfielder Josh Hamilton, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to Baseball Essential’s Robert Murray. The news was first reported by TR Sullivan of MLB.com.
A deal is close, but there is a lot of legal work to get done before a deal is completed. The trade is likely to be announced on Monday, Sullivan adds. It is also unclear who or what is headed to the Angels.
The Angels and Hamilton parting ways comes with very little surprise. After suffering a cocaine relapse and other incidents off the field, it was likely the two would separate.
It remains to be seen how much of Hamilton’s contract the Rangers will take on, but it’s likely the Angels will eat most of his $83 million remaining salary.
With the Rangers, Hamilton goes to a place of familiarity and it’s among the best places for him to get his career back on track. If Hamilton can get it all together, this move could be a steal for the Rangers. No matter what, we all will be rooting for him.
