The first month of the season has come to an end and this column has been active for the past couple weeks. We have had several successful picks and a few unsuccessful ones but if everything went as expected baseball would not be any fun to watch. For today we have a full slate with one game the Brewers and Cubs beginning at 2:20 EST with the rest of the games 7:05 or later. The weather does not seem like it will be a factor in any of these games. Let’s take a look at some guys to watch for today.
Jose Quintana vs Twins (FD: 7,600 DK: 7,200)
The Twins lit up Chris Sale last night, which is something that does not happen very often, but the truth of the matter is this offense is well below average. Enter tonight’s starter Quintana, a left-hander who has posted a sub-4 ERA in the past three seasons. He is off to a somewhat rough start this year but the left-hander has proven to be an efective pitcher his entire career. He has a cheap price and while he does not rack up the strikeouts he should be a great option for today.
Tom Koehler vs Phillies (FD: 6,600 DK: 5,800)
I feel like I say this every time I write about them but the Phillies are terrible. Their offense is old and does not score a ton of runs. That alone makes Koehler intriguing for today but add that to his effectiveness thus far in 2015 and you have a terrific option. His numbers do not look fantastic but they were hurt by one bad start against a Mets team that was red hot at the time. I like Koehler to put up a big game and earn the win in tonight’s contest.
Avisail Garcia vs Twins (FD: 2,700 DK: 4,400)
Kyle Gibson is starting for the White Sox and is a pitch to contact type of pitcher. Garcia is a high strikeout type but has a career BABIP of .340. This certainly favors Garcia as when he does make contact he is a very talented hitter. His price is cheap on FanDuel and I think he has a big day today.
Marcell Ozuna vs Phillies (FD: 2,800 DK: 4,300)
Injuries and other issues have forced Ozuna to move up in the order and the righty has been hitting behind Giancarlo Stanton in the order. He is a very talented offensive player and has been heating up after a slow start. Ozuna faces Jerome Williams today who is not a great pitcher so add the cheaply priced Ozuna to your lineups today.
Lorenzo Cain vs Tigers (FD: 3,300 DK: 3,900)
The Tigers are throwing left-hander Kyle Lobstein today so that makes Cain who posted wRC+ of 133 against southpaws last year a great play. Cain typically hits near the middle of the Royals’ order and with his career success against left-handers I think he will have a big day today.
Chris Carter vs Mariners (FD: 2,600 DK: 4,400)
Roenis Elias is starting for the Mariners today and Carter abused lefties in 2014 with a wRC+ of 140 and an ISO of .274. Elias throws left-handed obviously making these numbers important for Carter today. The slugger could easily rack up a few strikeouts but he has the chance to connect with a ball and send it a long long way. Too bad you do not get points for how far you hit it.
White Sox vs Twins
As I talked about with Garcia above Twins’ starter Kyle Gibson pitches to contact. Anytime a team faces a guy like that who has had some troubles with the long ball they make an attractive stack option. I like all the White Sox especially their cheap OFs, Adam Laroche and obviously slugger Jose Abreu.
Royals vs Tigers
The Tigers are starting a left-hander in Kyle Lobstein and thus far in 2015 the Royals have the second highest wRC+ of all teams against left-handers. Their number of 126 is only bettered by the Dodgers and tied by the Angels. The Royals’ lefties have done a good job against southpaws as well this year so do not be afraid to use them today as well.
