The Oakland Athletics have designated outfielder Alex Hassan for assignment, according to a league source. The move is to clear a roster spot for right-handed pitcher Angel Castro, who will join the teams bullpen, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Hassan has now been designated for assignment four times now since February.
Hassan, 27, played in four games with Triple-A Nashville and struggled mightily, hitting only 1-14 (.071). In 20 games played this season with the Texas Rangers and Athletics Triple-A affiliates, he has hit .230 with zero home runs and no RBI.
Even with his struggles this season, Hassan is likely to draw interest around the league. In 2014, with Triple-A Pawtucket (Boston Red Sox), he hit .287 with eight home runs and 55 RBI in 114 games.
