Option 6: Move Matt Holliday to first base.
Matt Holliday, Jason Heyward, Jon Jay, Peter Bourjos, Randal Grichuk. That right there is a list of the Cardinal outfielders. Unfortunately for the Cardinals there are only three outfield spots for manager Mike Matheny to divide among five candidates, all of whom have their own qualifications to start.
Holliday has limited mobility, and offers minimal defense in left field, which is why we often see him come out late in games in favor of the speedy Bourjos when the Cardinals hold a lead. Moving Holliday to first base would allow Grichuk (.309/.345/.618) and Bourjos (.259/.326/.400, 3 triples, 4 stolen bases) to see the field more while keeping Holliday’s potent bat in the lineup.
Grichuk is having himself a breakout year, and surely management would like to see the 23-year old more, but with the logjam that is the outfield, it’s been tough to slot him in the lineup. Moving Holliday would move Reynolds back to the bench (again, strengthening it) while allowing Grichuk to become even more comfortable in what would surely be more of a regular starting role.
