The hot stove continues to sizzle as the trade deadline draws nearer. The Los Angeles Angels are the latest team to be mentioned in possible trade rumors. They are reportedly showing interest in Cincinnati Reds‘ left fielder Jay Bruce as reported by Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.
The Angels were reportedly looking for a left-handed bat some weeks ago to help balance out their lineup. With the departure of left-handed slugger Josh Hamilton, their lineup is now rather right-handed heavy. The Angels are currently in a tight race for first place in the AL West with the upstart Houston Astros, so a left-handed bat would help balance out their lineup tremendously and give them a needed boost in AL West race.
The Angels are getting most of their production from their two right-handed boppers Mike Trout and Albert Pujols. Adding Bruce to the mix would help take some pressure of the two right-handed sluggers. Bruce has shown tremendous power with the Reds in his career and would fit in nicely between Trout and Pujols to form a lethal trio of home run hitters. He is currently hitting .255/.342/.474 with 15 home runs and 46 RBIs. He is having a bit of a down year, which may be attributed to him not being fully recovered from knee surgery he underwent last season, but that clearly is not deterring the Angels from showing interest in the slugger. With the Reds reportedly opening the doors to a fire sale now that the All-Star game is over, expect to see a number of their players mentioned in trade rumors over the week. No trade is close at this point, but a potential trade is possible as the deadline draws nearer. Bruce has hit .251/.325/.468 with 197 home runs over his eight-year career with the Reds.
