According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the New York Yankees are not willing to give up top prospects Luis Severino or Aaron Judge in a trade for Cole Hamels. Heyman says the Phillies have asked multiple times about Judge and Severino, but Yankee’s general manager Brian Cashman has not budged.
Hamels, 31, just threw his first career no-hitter against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, which could end up being his final start in a Philadelphia jersey. He’s had a bit of an up and down season posting a 3.64 ERA, 3.20 FIP, 3.14 xFIP in 128 2/3 innings pitched. Prior to his no-hitter on Saturday he gave up 14 runs in 6 1/3 innings pitched the past two games.
New York could use another rotation piece as CC Sabathia and Nathan Eovaldi have been the weak links. Michael Pineda, and Masahiro Tanaka have struggled at times, but are the Yankees’ most reliable starters as well as Ivan Nova, who just came back from injury.
Heyman notes that the Yankees are still searching for a starting pitcher such as Mike Leake and Jeff Samardzija. Both are free agents this upcoming winter, but could help the Yankees win the AL East and go far into the playoffs.
