The Texas Rangers are close to acquiring Cole Hamels and Jake Diekman from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for Jerad Eickhoff, catcher Jorge Alfaro, Nick Williams and Alec Asher, according to TR Sullivan of MLB.com, Scott Lucas of Newberg Report, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News and Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.
It’s far from a surprise that the Rangers are closing in on a deal for Hamels, as they have been mentioned as the favorites to land him for quite some time.
Hamels gives the Rangers a legitimate ace now and in the future, since he is signed through 2019. He is making $22.5 million every year through 2018 and has an option for the 2019 season.
Hamels, 31, has had somewhat of a down year, but is coming off of a no-hitter, so any concerns about him declining as a player appear to be invalid.
