The Atlanta Braves announced the acquisitions of outfielders Michael Bourn and Nick Swisher from the Cleveland Indians for infielder Chris Johnson.

This trade is more about trading contracts as Swisher has nearly $20MM guaranteed, Michael Bourn $17MM, and Chris Johnson $19.5MM. Jeff Passan of Yahoo says the Indians are sending close to $10MM in cash to Atlanta.

Swisher, 34, has struggled this year slashing .198/.261/.297 with two home runs, 54 wRC+ in just 111 plate appearances. He also dipped in 2014 with a .278 OBP and .331 slugging in 401 plate appearances.

Bourn, 32, is slashing .246/.313/.294 with 13 stolen bases, 74 wRC+, and -0.1 fWAR in 326 plate appearances. After signing with the Indians after the 2012 season, he quickly dropped off accumulating a 2.1 fWAR in over 1200 plate appearances.

Johnson, 30, is slashing .235/.272/.320 with two home runs, 63 wRC+, and -0.4 fWAR in 162 plate appearances. Johnson recently stated that he hoped the Braves would find a trade for him at the deadline, but I’m sure he will be fine with an August trade.

All three players have struggled mightily in recent seasons, but maybe change of scenery helps as they all creep towards the end of their contracts.
