Jeremy Affeldt Placed On DL After Freak Injury

San Francisco Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt was placed on the 15-day disabled list after another freak accident. He said he sustained a left knee subluxation and heard his knee pop while playing with his children in Spokane, Washington. RHP Michael Broadway was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.

This isn’t a rare occurrence for Affeldt as he sliced his hand open with a knife while trying to split frozen hamburgers in 2011, injured his knee playing with his children in 2012, and was hit by a foul ball while in the dugout during a 2012 postseason game. It’s safe to say Affeldt is a tad clumsy, possibly unlucky.

Manager Bruce Bochy told reporters,

Jeremy being Jeremy. I shouldn’t say it, because he’ll get on me, but he’s not the most athletic guy.

Affeldt was more intense when talking about his fluke injury,

Well, it’s another standard ‘me injury’ on an off day. We were kind of playing around, and I just lost my footing. … It’s unfortunate. I’m frustrated. I feel bad for what happened – it’s a little embarrassing – but I wasn’t doing anything stupid.

The 36-year-old left-hander is a free agent this winter and has posted a dismal 5.46 ERA in 31 1/3 innings this year while striking out 20 and walking 14. This isn’t a huge loss for the Giants bullpen as they try to catch the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

Broadway, 28, has pitched 8 1/3 innings at the big league level this season posting a 3.24 ERA, 4.57 FIP with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks. In 48 1/3 innings at Triple-A this year he had a 0.93 ERA with 64 strikeouts and 8 walks.
