According to Jon Heyman, Cleveland Indians team president Mark Shapiro will become the next team president for the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto’s current team president, Paul Beeston, is retiring at the end of the year, so they needed to find a replacement sooner rather than later. Beeston will finish out the rest of the year and GM Alex Anthopoulos will remain with the team in the same capacity going foward.
This is a big move for Shapiro, as he’s been in the Indians orginization since 1991, slowly working his way up the ladder to GM in 2001. He has won two Executive of the Year awards in his career with the Indians and has always done a respectable job at the helm for the Tribe. He took over as team president in 2010 and has held that position since.
Shapiro takes over a team that has the most potent offense in MLB and recently acquired Troy Tulowitzki and ace David Price. So he has quite the nice situation to walk into in 2016 and years going forward.
