Despite having lost three straight, the St. Louis Cardinals still sit atop the league as the very best team in baseball yet again. The Cards are 87-51 and currently hold a 4.5 game lead on the feisty Pittsburgh Pirates and a 6.5 game lead on the upstart Chicago Cubs. It’s going to be a fight to the finish for the division title, and each team is going to need every little edge they can get.
Well, the Redbirds may have just gotten a big, big edge. It was announced Wednesday afternoon that first basemen Matt Adams would be activated off the disabled list. The big man tore his quadriceps in late May and was expected to miss the entire season. Yet here he is, back and ready to go right in the dead heat of a pennant race. Adams wasn’t having the best of seasons, but he still brings a spark to the Cardinal lineup, and provides an upgrade over Mark Reynolds and Brandon Moss.
With the Cardinals only having an average second half, and the Cubs and Pirates breathing down their neck, Adams is going to be a big boost. He’s a strong hitter who can be inserted in the middle of the lineup, and also gives the Cardinals more depth to use in Moss and Reynolds. With Randal Grichuk returning, Matt Holliday and Matt Belisle making progress, and the continued whispers that Adam Wainwright could be back at some point, St. Louis is going to be a tough team to beat and could very well find themselves back in the World Series.
