2016 wish list: Seattle Mariners

5.) Upgrade that disastrous bullpen

The bullpen was a disaster last year and you can the point that arrow at Fernando Rodney. Rodney is long gone after a mid-season trade to the Chicago Cubs but key pieces do remain in place. Carson Smith can be a dominate reliever and was until the second half of 2015. Smith held a 1.73 ERA in the first half and took over as the closer for a while. Injuries and bad pitching led to Smith being overused out of the pen and a 2.94 second half ERA. Tom Wilhelmsen was great in the closers role in 2012 and looked like his old self to finish 2015 as the M’s closer. The main piece(s) missing is depth in the bullpen. I’d bring back Mark Lowe who loves pitching in Seattle (1.00 ERA in 34 games in 2015). I’d also sign Oliver Perez, which adds another lefty and a guy who’s had success in SafeCo (2.12 ERA in 2012).

Also on my wish list is a postseason berth and World Series, but neither of those can be bought or traded for. The core is strong in Seattle with Felix Hernandez, Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager. The key now is developing their young players and making the moves that compliment the core four. Easier said than done.
