6.) A Papelbon trade partner
This is like asking your parents for a pony for Christmas — probably not going to happen, but worth a try. The Nationals got greedy trading for Papelbon and it came back to bite them in the rear. Now they’re stuck with a malcontent who choked a superstar player in the dugout. Worse, the Nationals committed to Papelbon’s 2016 option as a part of the trade that brought him in. Realistically, there are probably no teams interested in acquiring Papelbon unless Washington eats all of his salary. If that’s what it takes to get Papelbon off the roster, the Nationals should be prepared to swallow their pride and take the hit on Papelbon’s salary.
