2.) A mid-tier arm
Cole, Liriano, and Burnett were outstanding for the Pirates in 2015. After those three, the rotation tailed off quite dramatically. The Jeff Locke and Charlie Morton combination combined to go 17-20 with an ERA of 4.63 in their combined 53 starts. The Cardinals have no holes in their rotation, and the Cubs will look to upgrade theirs this winter as well. Pittsburgh needs to consider doing the same.
There are a ton of mid-tier arms on the market this winter — Mike Leake, Brett Anderson, Marco Estrada, Scott Kazmir, Jaime Garcia, John Lackey, and Doug Fister. It’s quite a list, and the Pirates need to choose one.
