2. Trade Away Remaining Big Contracts
While the Braves traded away the likes of Justin Upton, Jason Heyward, Craig Kimbrel, Melvin Upton and the large and/or expiring contracts that accompanied them last offseason, there are still a few expensive contracts that the Braves can work to trade away this offseason. As the roster currently stands, Cameron Maybin, Nick Markakis, Nick Swisher and Michael Bourn are the only remaining players with contracts that can be considered “expensive.”
Although most of these players don’t have much trade value left, the Braves should still make some effort to trade at least a few of them this offseason. On top of the list of potential trade candidates would be Cameron Maybin and Nick Markakis, who both had decent bounce back seasons in 2015 and still maintain at least some potential trade value. The Braves clearly aren’t going to get a lot in return for either of these guys but could potentially eat some of their salaries in order to in effect “buy” prospects from a contending team. On the other hand, trade deadline acquisitions Nick Swisher and Michael Bourn hold almost no trade value as it currently sits and would need to be paid for completely if the Braves hope to get anything substantial or worthwhile in a potential trade for either player.
