2016 Committed Salary: $105.8 MM
The Cubs should be viewed as the front-runners to land David Price until the moment he signs elsewhere. The Cubs are not focusing heavily on Jake Arrieta‘s free agency, which is two years away. Chicago has the money to spend right now, while all of their rookies are making relatively low salaries. The Cubs can still absorb another ace’s salary, even with Jon Lester‘s big contract signed just last winter.
If something shocking develops and Price does not sign with the Cubs, Zimmermann is the next most logical target for Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer. Chicago would be a bit of a homecoming for Zimmermann, as he grew up in Wisconsin and attended college at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Zimmermann would be a nice consolation prize if the Cubs miss out on Price.
