Jason Heyward is the most intriguing free agent to watch this offseason. Traded from the Atlanta Braves to the St. Louis Cardinals last offseason, Heyward went on to have a very productive season for the 100-win Cardinals, slashing .293/.359/.439 to go with 13 home runs and 60 RBI while also providing his usual stellar defense. While many people take issue with the lack of power coming from Heyward’s 6′ 5″ 245-pound frame, his age is also a factor, as he is only 26 and it is thought that he could develop a power stroke as he ages. Even if Heyward proves unable to be capable of more than say 15 home runs a season over the rest of his career, he proved that he is still capable of providing a healthy slash line along with a good amount of RBIs. While many people put more value into offense, Heyward’s fantastic defense cannot be overlooked either, as the 26-year-old ranked 2nd among all outfielders in UZR with 22.6, and 3rd in DRS with a 24. Combining his defense and offense Heyward accumulated a WAR of 6.5 in 2015, all of which should allow Heyward to get a contract close to, if not eclipsing, $200 million. Despite the hefty price tag, many teams will be in on Heyward as it is not often that a 26-year-old with his tools hits the free agent market. The following teams will be linked to Heyward throughout his free agency.
