The A’s need to bolster their bullpen.
The Athletics, usually known for winning games with good a bullpen, had an awful bullpen last season. The A’s were one of four teams to receive a negative WAR from their bullpen. Their bullpen added -0.1 wins to their team last season. That is awful and clearly an issue that needs to be addressed this offseason.
Darren O’Day, maybe the best free agent reliever, could be a target for the A’s, but it seems unlikely that the A’s would shell out such a contract that O’Day will demand. Instead, I would look for the A’s to take chances on bounce-back candidates, that they could sign for cheap. That list includes Bobby Parnell, Jason Motte, and Tommy Hunter. Not only could these type of relievers add value to their team if they pitch well for them, but they could also become trade candidates mid-season if the A’s once again find themselves on the outside looking in.
It should be also noted that if Sean Doolittle can return to full health in 2016, it would be a big boost to their bullpen.
