3. Will the Padres Trade Away Craig Kimbrel?
Despite Darren O’Day’s status as the prized jewel of the free agent closer/reliever market, his name pales in comparison to that of Craig Kimbrel. Kimbrel had a bit of a rocky first year in San Diego by his standards, although he still finished the season with his usual strong numbers. After a disappointing season overall for the Padres, it is very likely that the team will look to recoup some of its lost minor league and major league assets. Currently the best way to do that is by entertaining the possibility of a Craig Kimbrel trade.
If the Padres made Kimbrel available on the market, there would be no less than ten teams who would instantly be interested in acquiring him for the remainder of his current contract. The list of potential suitors is potentially endless, which means the Padres could really get quite a haul for the services of arguably the best closer in baseball. It remains to be seen whether the Padres will actually put Kimbrel on the market, but at this point that seems very likely.
