5. Can They Crack Three Million In Attendance Again?
See all those empty seats behind this father-son duo? That’s two last place finishes voiding the seats like Mary Mallon clearing a soup kitchen. Okay, I’d bet $1 that photo was taken after a tough loss, when most fans had left in the seventh inning to see if they could actually navigate their way out of the Fens and back home.
Seriously, though, if the on-field product isn’t aesthetically pleasing, then people tend not to treat ownership’s bank accounts with 700+ consecutive sellouts. The last three seasons attendance numbers reflect that, as they’ve drawn 2.83, 2.96, and 2.88 million butts in the seats. I’m positive that uptick to 2.96 in 2014 was the early season response to winning the World Series in ’13.
With new management in place and the return of strong leader, John Farrell, can the Sox contend and, therefore, bring more fans to the park? There are a lot of factors at play here and it will be interesting to keep tabs on.
